Shurley English Homeschool Curriculum

Curriculum, Language Arts CurriculumNo CommentsNovember 7, 2008Homeschool Curriculum

Shurley English has become one of the top language arts curriculum choices for homeschool families, but is it right for you?

This homeschool curriculum, which focuses on grammar and language arts, is one of the best overall curriculum choices available it uses a unique approach that helps with not only grammar and writing but also speaking skills.

It also brings in literary elements to help teach an appreciation for both contemporary and classical literature. It provides everything necessary including resources, workbooks and even computer based materials to help provide you with a large support foundation. It consists of seven levels and provides a basis on which each level builds eliminating the problems caused when you start a new year and have to review.

Curriculum Benefits

shurleyenglishThis language arts curriculum will provide you with everything you need broken down into easy to understand and more importantly easy to teach segments. This program actually teaches the way to teach language, the parts of speech and how they come together to form the language itself rather than just giving a rendition out of textbook.

This requires a great deal more repetition than most information because of the way it is presented. With the revolutionary way that this program presents language it is easy to see why it is one of the best programs on the market for teaching a lasting appreciation of literature and of language itself.

Language, writing and speech is something that is necessary for any child and learning to speak and write will is something that can serve a child far more than just about anything else that they can learn. An appreciation and understanding of literature is something that can show people the possibilities and show them how to analysis and think by learning the meanings behind language.

Possible Drawbacks

There are a few downsides to this particular program.

1. One of the biggest is that the program has not been updated since 1989 on some of the levels. While there is something to be said about the fact that language does not when it comes to grammar and language arts change much there are differences which need to be considered when teaching modern or contemporary language usage.

2. The second disadvantage is the fact that this program is expensive costing close to or a little over $200 per level. This can equal a tidy sum when it comes to looking at just a single subject.

An Investment in Quality

However, the Shurley English curriculum is one that teaches about language and grammar and does it in such a way that it eliminates the need for mindless repetition and consistent review.

This information is presented in such a way that it makes it easy to remember and more importantly make it easy to teach. Grammar is one of the biggest issues when it comes to teaching English and having to explain the parts of speech. This is one of the biggest issues that comes with doing a home school curriculum and being a parent teacher.
