7 Generation Games, games to teach math

About 7 Generation Games

7 Generation Games makes games and apps to teach math. Games are available for all devices and easy-to-use. The games are aimed at kids age 8 to 14, covering math concepts from multiplication and division to fractions to middle school-level statistics.

The content is cross-curricular, integrating social studies, language arts and foreign language with math. The storylines are drawn from history, including Native American history and ancient empires. Math is often taught within the context of the game and focuses on real-world applications.

Many homeschool parents say that math is the subject they most struggle with with teaching. However, it is very important that your children have a strong foundation in mathematics. These games are not only a way to review math concepts, but they actually teach students math through the games. There is also a large library of educators resources and videos that you can use with the games to help teach your child math.

These games can be a fun way to teach, practice and review math.

Benefits of 7 Generation Games to Teach Math

There are many of benefits to using these games as part of your homeschool curriculum.

Children tend to be far more resilient when playing video games than when solving math problems. Think about how many times you have seen a kid trying over and over to get a just a little bit farther in a video game level. You rarely see that same effort applied to math problems. By putting the math in a game, 7 Generation Games engages kids deeper in math learning.

There is a lot of content for teaching multiplication, division, fractions and basic statistics. And many of the games are very different, so they do not get boring or repetitive as you go through the series.

Being cross-curricular, the games teach math and other subjects at the same time. The storylines are drawn from history, including Native American history and ancient empires. In fact, the games on Native American tribes were developed with the tribes to ensure cultural accuracy. Several of the games are bilingual so they can also be used as a resource for teaching Spanish.

One really great – and different – thing about these games is that wrong answers lead to resources that explain and teach how to solve the problems. This approach is very different from many other games where wrong answers simply lead to more problems. Kids can also ask for hints and explanations when presented with math problems to solve.

For Parents

7 Generation Games makes it very clear what math concepts are being covered in what game. They break down what each activity in a game teaches and how it aligns to standards.

7 Generation Games offers hundreds of additional educator resources, including videos, PowerPoints, suggested activities and more, to complement the content in the games. These resources are very helpful for homeschool parents when it comes to teaching math.

Cost

The games are very affordable, ranging in price from free to $9.99. You can also get the games as a package. For many homeschooling families on a budget, this low cost makes the games an attractive option for teaching math.

Disadvantages to 7 Generation Games

While 7 Generation Games does have one app for teaching counting, almost all of 7 Generation Games are aimed at Grades 3-7.

7 Generation Games is not a comprehensive curriculum that will cover all math content or concepts for a grade level, so it is best used as a supplemental resource or in combination with other resources/curriculum.
