The Logic of English Visitor Review:
My 11yo son has been struggling with phonics, handwriting, and spelling since the beginning. We thought at first he might be dyslexic, but no. We have used many different curriculum but none seemed to help. Last spring we stumbled across The Logic of English at our Homeschool conference and thought “Why not?” Each lesson includes phonics, grammar, spelling, and handwriting. Phonics consists of learning the phonograms for the day and reviewing previous ones. Here’s where the Logic comes in. For example, long A can be spelled AI or AY. This program explains that though they sound the same, AI can’t be used at the end of a word because English words rarely end in I. So, long A at the end of a word would be AY. Phonograms with many sounds are presented by explaining which sounds are most common and where they’re usually found in a word. Since the lessons are quite long and intensive, we usually split each lesson into several parts.
The spelling program goes hand in hand with the phonics; using the same rules. Grammar and spelling flashcards help to keep the rules fresh in the child’s mind.
The handwriting program is unique in that the author suggests going straight to cursive, to minimize letter reversals and other common errors. Textured cards are included for each stroke and letter as well.
My son has made more progress in the last 3 months with this program than in an entire year with others!
I highly suggest The Logic of English if you have a struggling reader or speller!
