Do not use k12 at all, I am a 9th grader in k12 Colorado virtual academy, used 2014 to 2015. I do not like k12 at all, I could not contact the counselor at all about my english course that I didn’t get until the second semester of school, I called and emailed her and got nothing, then she emailed me during the second semester and I finally got the course. With the teachers there is good communication with, I do have one favorite teacher but the curriculum is too hard and fast paced for me, once you get behind you can’t get caught up at all. They haven’t updated any of their courses, and trying to get help, you have to attend early in the morning in order to get help on things, I have one teacher who has given me a catch up plan, but everything else is hard to get caught up with. Then I had a different course in the second semester, so first semester I have geography, this semester I now have government, changing courses on the students can throw them off and have them confused.

We have had similar experiences with K12. I wouldn’t say don’t use it. It may be a good fit for some families. I have 3 students that have used it. My oldest used it for her last year of high school so she could access a few courses the local high school did not offer and because she did not want to be on block scheduling. They did a horrible job of getting her supplies and getting her set up with the additional classes. I think her gpa dropped because of it. Luckily however due to the class size she was in the top 7% of her class and gained automatic acceptance at UT.
My next student had some struggles as well and was constantly trying to catch up. He winded up failing one class. When he took it over the next year everything was fine.
Finally, I have one student also in high school that started off at Connections Academy then switched to K12 and has struggled the entire time. It has been very hard for her to keep up with her work. The teachers have been very responsive and helpful but we went an entire semester without books and she did not pass 3 classes.
The counselors don’t seem to be very responsive or useful. If you are good at managing yourself this is a useful program. We are ready for the year to begin since they have completely revamped the online experience. Hopefully, it will be easier for students and parents to keep track of what should be completed and when so students don’t fall behind. I don’t think the kids are given too much work I think it was just very poorly organized before.
