Calvert Homeschool in an extension of the successful Calvert School in Baltimore. The homeschool curriculum is based on what is actually taught daily in their day school program and adapted for homeschooling families.
What They Offer
The Calvert School has curriculum for grades kindergarten through eighth grade.
A traditional home school program, they provide detailed, daily lessons in the major core subjects. They also offer placement testing, educational counselors, advisory teaching services and transcripts for homeschooling families.
How it Works
Each daily lesson includes a list of materials needed, step-by-step instructions, and a listing of assignments. Everything your child will need for the entire year is included delivered to you when you sign up for their program. (Moms LOVE this – no more hunting for supplies!)
If you use their teaching services, Calvert even offers some great online education options using computer technology to help even the youngest students. For example: Beginning readers can actually read aloud to their Advisory Teacher online! They also help facilitate live student interaction and group education opportunities in the middle grades.
Pros and Cons of Calvert School
Advantages of this Program:
Busy parents like this option because Calvert does all of the planning and gathering of materials for them. They just open the Calvert box and are ready to teach. This takes away lot of the planning and guesswork that some parents dread and makes it really easy to jump in and homeschool even if you have never done it before.
Older students can also do much of the work on their own which helps them become independent learners.
Drawbacks of this Program:
The biggest drawback for some families is the cost of tuition…especially for larger families with a more limited budget. Many families do not have thousands of dollars budgeted each year for their school and therefore cannot afford this option.
The other drawback is the lack of flexibility for the parent. Some parents want to have more input into designing the coursework each day and don’t want it done for them. If that is how you like to homeschool, then this program does not leave much freedom for that type of customization.
