I’ve been using Abeka Arithmetic with my daughter since first grade so this is year three for us with it. I enjoy their arithmetic curriculum and find that it teaches children well and it covers a lot. I love that the books are large so I feel I’m getting my money’s worth and that it is thorough.
My complaints with this year’s book are that some things aren’t given enough instruction/explanation/how-to for kids, and that the book could do more to hold a child’s interest. When we arrived at division, I found that we had to use other resources to fully explain to my daughter how to do and instruct her better. My daughter is very bright and caught onto multiplication quickly so I know it wasn’t the level of math in general. I feel they need to explain a lot more clearly and detailed on the new processes they teach. This will ensure that kids will grasp it well and be able to learn it.
The books could also benefit from adding some fun things to keep kids interested and enjoying their math. With every subject, kids usually enjoy some fun in their school work to offer a slight change of pace.
Other than that, we really enjoy the Abeka arithmetic books. I feel that my daughter is getting a good mathematical education with them.
